Cary Chung is a bagpipe enthusiast who has devoted his life to playing and promoting the Scottish bagpipe. His piping story begins with Scouting. The Scout Association of Hong Kong established the pipe band in 1971. Cary Chung, a 15-year-old scout at the time, decided to join the pipe band to learn the bagpipe after learning that the Scout Association of Hong Kong had established a pipe band.
鍾治正是一位風笛熱衷者,他畢生致力於演奏和推廣蘇格蘭風笛。他的風笛故事於童軍開始。香港童軍總會於1971年成立風笛隊。當時15歲的童軍鍾治正得知香港童軍總會成立了風笛隊後便決定加入風笛隊學習蘇格蘭風笛。
In 1978, Superintendent Peter Chau MBE (later the Commissioner) of the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Police (equivalent to the Special Constabulary in the UK) decided to form a pipe band to replace the Filipino jazz band. Chau recruited the first batch of members in the Hong Kong Scout Pipe Band, and Cary Chung was one of them.
1978年,皇家香港輔助警察隊的警司周湛樵MBE (後來的輔助警察隊總監)決定成立一隊風笛隊去取代由菲律賓人組成的爵士樂團。 周湛樵於是在香港童軍風笛隊中招募第一批成員加入,鍾治正為其中一員。
The pipe band of the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force started operation in 1980 with donations from the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club and Sir Shiu-kin Tang, and Cary Chung was appointed as the first Pipe Major in 1981.
皇家香港輔助警察隊風笛隊在得到英皇御准賽馬會和鄧肇堅爵士的捐助下在1980年正式運作,而鍾氏亦都於1981年被委任為第一位首席風笛手。
While serving in the Auxiliary Police Force, Cary Chung was honoured to be introduced by the band president of the Auxiliary Police Force to learn the bagpipe from the British Army Garrison in Hong Kong. He studied with the Scots Guards Pipe Band at Stanley Fort between 1982 and 1985. He then studied with the instructors of the Army School of Bagpipe Music from Edinburgh in 1987, 1989, and from 1992 to 1995. In addition, Cary Chung was also approved by the band president of the Auxiliary Police Force to participate in the piping course organised by the British Army when the Royal Highland Regiment (the Black Watch) was deployed in Hong Kong in 1996 and achieved an excellent result.
於輔助警察隊工作期間,鍾治正有幸被輔助警察隊的樂隊主席引薦到駐港英軍學習風笛。他曾經在1982年到1985年間與赤柱軍營跟隨蘇格蘭衛隊風笛隊學習,並之後於1987年、1989 年、1992年到1995年間跟隨英軍風笛學校的教官學習。另外,鍾氏亦都在黑衛士軍團於1996年在香港駐軍期間,得到輔助警察隊的樂隊主席的批准,參與由英軍舉辦的風笛課程並得到優異成績。
Under the leadership of Cary Chung, the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force participated in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 1985 and has performed frequently in various public venues, including the Police Force's Beating Retreat and the Queen's Birthday Parade.
在鍾治正的帶領下,皇家香港輔助警察隊於1985年參與了愛丁堡軍操匯演,並且經常在不同公共場合表演,包括警隊的鳴金收兵以及英女王壽辰匯演。
In addition, the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Band also actively participated in competitions in Hong Kong and overseas from 1988 to 1995. Led by Cary Chung, the band won the Hong Kong Pipe Band Championships from 1991 to 1993 and came second in 1995. In addition, the band participated in the Jakarta Highland Games from 1989 to 1994 and won first place four times and second place twice. In 1995, Cary Chung led the band to attend the West Australia Highland Gathering and won the best marching award. Chung, hence, was promoted to Inspector with the appointment of Director of Music in 1991 for his achievements with the band.
皇家香港輔助警察隊樂隊亦於1987年到1995年在香港以及海外積極參與比賽。在鍾氏的帶領下,樂隊於1991年到1993年期間贏得香港風笛錦標賽的冠軍,以及在1995年贏得第二名。此外,樂隊在1989年到1994年間參加了雅加達高地運動會,並且有四次得到第一名,兩次得到第二名。1995年,鍾治正亦都帶領樂隊出席West Australia Highland Gathering 並得到最佳步操獎項。而鍾治正在1991年因為他在樂隊的功績被晉升為督察兼音樂總監。
The Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force stopped participating in competitions after 1997 due to the handover of Hong Kong's sovereignty. Although the Auxiliary Police Force band no longer participates in competitions after the handover of Hong Kong sovereignty, the band was still active in public under Chung's leadership, including police's passing out parades and different street parades. Chung voluntarily served in the Auxiliary Police Force for nearly 35 years in his spare time and left the Auxiliary Police Force in 2012.
皇家香港輔助警察隊在1997年後因為香港主權移交而終止出席海外比賽。雖然輔助警察隊樂隊在香港主權移交後不再參與比賽,但樂隊在鍾氏的帶領下依然在公眾場合中活躍。鍾氏在工餘時間在輔助警察隊服務接近35年,於2012年離開輔助警察隊。
Cary Chung's day profession is the management of a property company. Apart from serving in the Auxiliary Police Force in his spare time, he is also dedicated to using his knowledge to promote bagpipes in Hong Kong, especially after the end of British rule in Hong Kong in 1997.
鍾氏的日間的專業是一間物業公司的管理層。除了在工餘時間為輔助警察隊服務外,他亦都致力利用他的知識在香港推廣風笛,特別是在1997年英國結束香港的管治後。
In 1997, Cary Chung assisted in establishing and teaching the pipe band of the 21st Islands Group Boys Scouts in Cheung Chau (an outlying island in Hong Kong). In 2002, Chung assisted in the establishment and served as the head coach of the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol Marching. In 2007, Chung established a pipe band in Window of the World in Shenzhen, the first pipe band in Mainland China, and tried to promote bagpipe music in Mainland China. In 2009, Chung established a pipe band at Macau University of Science and Technology and was appointed as the head of piping by the University. This is the first pipe band in Macau. He also has been appointed as the bagpipe tutor in the Auxiliary Medical Service (another civil defence volunteering force in Hong Kong) and the Hong Kong Sea School. In 2014, Chung was appointed the Assistant Regional Director of the New Territories by the Hong Kong Scouts Association to oversee the operation of all bands in the New Territories.
1997 年,鍾治正於長洲協助成立並任教香港童軍離島區第21旅風笛隊。2002 年,鍾氏協助成立香港交通安全隊樂隊並擔任總教練。2007 年,鍾氏在深圳世界之窗成立了中國第一隊風笛隊,並且嘗試在中國大陸推廣風笛音樂。2009 年,鍾氏在澳門科技大學成立風笛隊並獲大學委任為樂團團長。這是澳門的第一隊風笛隊。 他亦都於香港的醫療輔助隊和赤柱航海學校教授風笛。2014 年,鍾氏被香港童軍總會委任為新界地域助理總監,監督所有位於新界地域的樂隊的運作。
In 2006, the Red Guards Pipe Band, under the leadership of Cary Chung, together with Professor David Gwilt MBE, Robert Wallace (the principal of College of Piping in Glasgow), the Whistlebinkies (a well-known Scottish folk band from Scotland), and the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, performed a series of traditional Scottish and Celtic music in Hong Kong City Hall.
2006年,紅衛士樂團在鍾治正的帶領下,與紀大衛教授 MBE、格拉斯哥風笛學院校長Robert Wallace、來自蘇格蘭的Whistlebinkies和香港城市室樂團在香港大會堂攜手演出一連串蘇格蘭傳統音樂與凱爾特音樂。
Cary Chung also established the Hong Kong Piping and Drumming Academy in 2018. The Academy held two summer schools in Hong Kong in 2018 and 2019, with piping and drumming examinations and competitions held within the summer schools, which were the first time after the last Hong Kong Pipe Band Championships in 1995. The Academy was registered as a not-for-profit society under the Societies Ordinance in 2021 (Registration number CP/LIC/SO/19/63577).
鍾氏亦都成立了香港風笛鼓樂學院。學院於2018年和2019年在香港開辦兩屆風笛夏令營,並舉行風笛和鼓樂考試及比賽。這是繼1995年最後一屆香港風笛錦標賽後的首次。香港風笛鼓樂學院於 2021 年根據《社團條例》註冊為非牟利社團 (註冊編號CP/LIC/SO/19/63577)。
